Kim Rody is a fine artist who specializes in large acrylic canvases that feature images of the sea and its creatures. Kim has been a full-time artist since 2000 and she uses email marketing to develop and nurture a specific niche of followers, some of whom she hopes become collectors of her work. In addition to her large canvas paintings, Kim also sells giclée prints and note cards featuring her art.

As Kim explains, selling art is always a challenge, no matter what the economic condition is. “It’s important to nurture relationships with people who are drawn to your work,” Kim says. “Buying art is definitely a ‘splurge’ purchase rather than a necessary one.”

In order to capture those “splurged” dollars, artists like Kim have to stay in front of their audience and remain top of mind. Kim uses an email newsletter to show off her new paintings, to share a calendar of events where her work will be shown, and to post links to her blog content and Facebook page. “If I’m running a special that can be found at the bottom of the email, I also tease it throughout the newsletter,” Kim explains.

Why email? “I'm a visual person, and I build the newsletter around my images, whether they’re paintings or personal pictures,” Kim says. “I let the words and images play off each other.”

Kim encourages customers to refer her newsletter and artwork to friends by adding multiple “Forward to Friend” buttons in each mailing and offering a calendar featuring her art to customers that refer business her way. “It’s a great way to get qualified referrals,” Kim says. “Folks think hard about who they want to refer, and only send my email to friends that will have an interest in what I am doing.”

While she doesn’t track specifically the return on her investment, Kim says that each newsletter she sends out more than pays for an entire year’s subscription to Constant Contact Email Marketing. The newsletter generates sales through the deals she offers, and drives traffic to events where her art work is being shown, which can result in further sales.

The newsletter is also a great conversation starter between Kim and her customers. “My favorite response is when customers tell me they love a specific painting and why they do,” Kim says. “Of course, I also like it when they tell me they want to buy it.”

Blogger Block

Finally getting back in action here to post some updates about clients. My writer's block has lasted months too long!

  • Lendon Gray is starting her clinic year, and fund raising for The Dressage Federation. Her Olympic student Courtney King-Dye is the featured equestrian in Groton, MA May 1-3 as announced with THIS email to her Dressage4kids subscribers.
  • Two of my clients are Senior Helpers franchisees. Tess Bockes in Harrisburg sent her 7th newsletter (including two in November) titled "Stay Warm, Stay Healthy and Dance!" . John Cabrey in Lansdale published his first in late December (view<<<). Both of these clients started with small mailing lists. Tess's list has grown rapidly through her networking, and by including pertinent articles from her business aquaintances! Remarkable (50%+) open rates for both companies!
  • First Choice Rehab is now in their third year as my client. Their December Newsletter (view<<<) follows their consistent format of artciles on health, their physical therapist's activities in the industry, an employee profile, and a patient success story.
Given the economy, email newsletters are becoming a great means of staying in touch with customers and prospects at a fraction of the expense of the postal service.

re: Facebook

I'm beginning to believe that "being there" is a better bet than missing the exposure. There's probably very little chance of pereferal damage, and if it picks up one or two additional riders per year it's a cheap success. (ever hear the 'client for life' theory? If it's a movie theater at $5 x 3 movies / hear * 60 years ... it adds up. I think that was a Carnegie item)

Let me suggest (and I use this thought frequently) " What would grandpa Fred have said, and would I have thought he was standing in the way of progress"... and, of course, I was right.

So now what do I tell my daughter? I don't want to have grown up to be her Grandpa Fred? ! ;) This was a good thought... I need to post it!

Enjoy the day!
Jeff

The ultimate web tool guy!

Mark Wesling is a classical guitar friend of mine from Hershey, PA. Mark performs, teaches and publishes CD collections of his work, many originals. His website takes advantage of many excellent web-based techniques... most of which are FREE !!

Now he's using his blog to show another side of himself and his offerings... poetry?!

Rose Anderson's Pure Gallery Website, newsletters and blog
Next-Level Automotive's Website and blog <<< href="http://firstchoicerehab.com/">Website and newsletters.
My houseflipping blog
and my PonyClubDad blog.

now to get some work done... Jeff

Get Blogging before you get Blogged-Down

How many tools are you putting to good use?

Website? ( everyone)

Email Newsletter? ( the savy)

Blog? ( the few)

Almost a year ago I wrote an article on this topic, and only a few people have figured it out.

Your Blog is the active day-to-day place to chronicle your business and developments. Your newsletter is probably monthly unless you're a restaurant or (politician). And your website just lays there!

Here's an example: www.dressage4kids.com
is the website for Lendon Gray, two time olpympic equestrian competitor and organizer of the Youth Dressage Festival each summer in NY. I started publishing her newsletters more than a year ago. (remind me to update that page...) This summer she started posting to her blog and putting more of her personal thoughts and musings on the internet. http://graydressage.blogspot.com is a completely independent and separate operating system, and she can update it any time from any computer in the world... ( I had hoped she would make an entry from Germany last month)
More later, Jeff

Rave reviews!

Many Thanks to First Choice Rehabilitation who just celebrated their first year of email newsletters to their patients and associates!

Karen, their Marketing Manager, gave us a great review at the SOS Healthcare Networking luncheon in Camp Hill this week. They put the text of the articles together, select some photos that are representative of the topic, and provide a spreadsheet of their new additions to the mailing list each month. They post the newsletter to the ARCHIVES on their website each month.

I format the articles to post individually, and then assemble the newsletter into a template that has evolved over the past year. They began with 410 addresses of current patients and are now over 1300 permission based addresses. Their readership averages a confirmed count of at least 25%.

This is a very topical newsletter format, with NO sales content! The format is now (December) very consistent, with a seasonal article, a story about a community involvement they are hosting, an employee profile and a patient 'Success Story'.

Give me a call if I can assist with staying current with your clients, patients, donors or prospects with effective and affordable email marketing programs.

Happy January,
Jeff

Cleaning up lists

Interesting challenge...

Client purchased a 150,000 name list, purported to be of people interested in receiving email solicitations. I know this was going to be a headache, but took the challenge.

Started out by trying to batch 1000 addresses thru constant contact, but more than 40% of addresses were bouncing… Two batches and Constant Contact shut us off.

Went back to guy who produced the list and he steered us to Streamsend.com

Clumsy broadcasting tool, but managed to clone the email and start sending batches thru that site. Ended up with 40% + bounces, but at least got the first email sent and generated quite a few positive responses.

Took all the 'unsubscribes' from both Constant Contact and Sendstream and entered into both sources to preclude spaming anyone who opted out.

Will repeat process with Black Friday blast of sale announcement that went to their regular subscribers on Tuesday. Wish us luck!

adding calendars to emails, websites and blogs

Here's a great tip on posting CALENDAR events on your website... I received this from Mary Waldron. Took a little tinkering ( and reading her instructions) but it includes some great features. how about this invitation?
Mary has a link to Tuckanoe. I added calender items to www.mountainlaurel.ponyclub.org and www.dressage4kids.com

Many thanks to Mary for her idea!

Here's Mary's note:
Hi Jeff,

I wanted to see what you thought about Google Calendar. My daughters HS Quizbowl team has their schedule in Google Calendar and I added it to my Google Calendar, which was wonderful. So I set one up for Tuckahoe Pony Club and linked it to the website (the site is still torn apart but you'll see the Google link and the picture gallery):

http://tuckahoe.ponyclub.org

I didn't want everyone to be able to mess with the dates, so I set the account up with the email address dc@tuckahoe.ponyclub.org and our club officers will have the passwords. To display the calendar, you do this (cc'd from the HS techie):

1. When you are looking at the google calendar(s) you've created, on the left side is a bubble called MY CALENDARS listing the different calendars you have (each one color coded).
2. Click on the little arrow to the right of the calendar name, and choose "calendar settings"
3. Scroll down to the section named "Calendar Address" - click on the button called "HTML"
4. a pop-up window will appear with the whole complex web address. You can then save this link as a shortcut or copy/paste the link into an email...etc.

It's an embed command.

I am also very curious about the 'document' feature - that might be helpful too.

Mary
Mary Waldman send a note recently about how to post pics and albums to a website.

Let's use the thought about how to have your club members post their stuff where you can link to it... That way they can be responsible for (or lack therof) their own accomplishments and posting. This webstuff gets old when it's a onw-person band...

I like picasa, although Kodak is ok too. I sent this article to Mary and she replied that she figured it out and it worked for her. http://tuckahoe.ponyclub.org/

Other examples at www.mountainlaurel.ponyclub.org and Dressage4kids.com .

Let me know if this works for you, and if I can further clarify how to play with picasa.com

More ideas to follow...

Survey tools entering email arena.

A quick note,

Constant contact just released a survey tool that is pretty flexible. Take a look at (just an example) the information I'm getting back after a survey went out yesterday. ( attached.)

What a nice way to close the loop relative to buyer's remorse or to complete an engagement. This can include a highlight for referrals!

If you received my email yesterday, please take a few minutes to respond so I'll have added data before meeting next Tuesday. I would love to have you attend and add input to the process. If you did not receive the survey you can click HERE to offer input.

Thanks! and have a good finish to your week,

Refer a friend incentives

I just started an incentive to email readers for 'forwarding this to a friend' for one of my clients.

The reporting system I use records who forward an email, so a coupon can suggest a gift item or entry in a drawing to anyone who forwards to a friend.

Will keep you posted!

Email seasonal trends! fro Emal Insider

Email List Trends Reviewby Bill McCloskey, Wednesday, January 24, 2007
WE'VE BEEN MONITORING THE NUMBER of active legitimate email marketing lists, and have been noticing some interesting trends. In general, we see a steady build-up of the number of lists sending emails from October through the Christmas holidays, followed by a steep decline. Last year the decline remained relatively steady from January to October, but this year we are noticing an almost immediate recovery. After the end of Christmas, we saw the same decline in the number of active lists as last year, but almost an immediate build-up, with active lists now approaching their pre-holiday peaks.
